How to Maintain and Clean Marble Kitchen Countertops

Marble rewards a little care with years of beauty. These simple habits will keep your kitchen marble tops looking their best.
Daily cleaning
- Wipe the surface with a soft cloth and warm water.
- Use a mild, pH-neutral cleaner made for stone, or a drop of gentle dish soap.
- Dry with a soft cloth to avoid water marks.
What to avoid
- Acids: lemon juice, vinegar, tomato, soft drinks and many bathroom or multi-surface cleaners can etch polished marble.
- Abrasives: scouring pads and gritty powders can scratch the surface.
- Bleach and harsh chemicals: they can dull or damage the stone.
- Cutting directly on the stone: always use a chopping board.
Spills and stains
Wipe spills immediately, especially oil, palm oil, stew, wine and coffee. Blot rather than rub. Coasters under glasses and trays under oil bottles help prevent rings.
Heat
Use trivets or mats under very hot pots and pans straight from the fire.
Sealing
Sealing helps marble resist stains. A simple test: drop a little water on the surface. If it soaks in and darkens the stone quickly, it is time to reseal. Use a sealer made for natural stone and follow the product instructions.
Etch marks
Dull spots from acids are called etches. Light etching on polished marble can often be improved by professional polishing. Ask us if you need help.
