7 Things to Consider Before Buying Kitchen Marble Tops

A stone countertop is one of the most visible parts of your kitchen and one you will live with for years. Before you buy kitchen marble tops, check these seven things.

1. How you really use your kitchen

Do you fry, grind pepper and cook large pots of stew every day? Or is your kitchen used lightly? Marble is beautiful but sensitive to acids and stains. For heavy daily cooking, also consider granite or quartz. Our marble vs granite guide compares them side by side.

2. The actual slab

Natural stone varies from slab to slab. Ask to see the real slab or clear photos of it in good light, not just a small sample. Check the veining, colour and any natural marks.

3. The finish

A polished finish is glossy and shows off veining. A honed (matte) finish is softer-looking and makes etch marks less visible. Ask which finish suits your lifestyle.

4. Cut-outs for sink, hob and taps

Decide on your sink and hob before fabrication. An undermount sink gives a clean look but needs a polished cut-out. Have the appliance models or exact sizes ready.

5. Cabinets must be ready and level

Countertops sit on your base cabinets. They must be fully installed, strong and level before final measurement, or the stone will not sit properly.

6. Where the joints will be

Long or L-shaped kitchens may need joins. Ask where the joints will fall and how they will be finished. Good fabrication makes joints neat and discreet.

7. Who will fabricate and install it

The best slab can be ruined by poor cutting and fitting. Look at the installer's previous work, ask what is included, and make sure they measure on site. See examples on our Our Work page.
