Marble vs Granite Kitchen Countertops: Which Is Better for Your Lagos Home?

Kitchen with black stone countertops, a matching island top and dark cabinets with gold handles

Choosing between marble and granite is one of the first decisions in any kitchen project. Both are natural stones, both look beautiful, and both can last for many years. But they behave differently in a real kitchen, and the right choice depends on how you cook, how much care you are willing to give, and the look you want.

The quick answer

  • Choose granite if your kitchen is used heavily every day and you want a tough surface that needs little care.
  • Choose marble if you love soft, elegant veining and are happy to wipe spills quickly and reseal the stone from time to time.

If you are still unsure, read on: the details below will help you decide.

Appearance

Marble is known for its flowing veins on a white, grey or cream background. It gives a kitchen a bright, luxurious, classic feel and is often chosen for statement islands and backsplashes.

Granite usually has a speckled or grainy pattern and comes in a wide range of colours, from deep black to light grey, beige and dramatic multi-coloured slabs. Dark granites are popular in Nigerian kitchens because they hide everyday marks.

Because both are natural, every slab is different. Always look at the actual slab, or clear photos of it, before fabrication.

Durability and scratches

Granite is one of the hardest stones used for worktops. It resists scratches from everyday use very well.

Marble is softer. It can scratch if you cut directly on it or drag heavy pots across it. Always use a chopping board on a marble countertop.

Heat

Granite copes well with heat, which is useful in busy kitchens. Marble also tolerates warm items, but sudden, intense heat can mark or damage any stone. For both, it is good practice to use trivets for very hot pots straight from the fire.

Stains and acids

This is the biggest difference.

Marble reacts with acids. Lemon juice, vinegar, tomato stew and some cleaning products can leave dull marks called "etches" on polished marble. Oils and coloured liquids can also stain if left to soak in.

Granite is much less sensitive to acids, and a well-sealed granite top resists most everyday stains.

Maintenance

Cost

Neither stone has a single fixed price. Cost depends on the specific slab, the size of your kitchen, the number of cut-outs, edge details and installation. Our article on what affects the cost of marble kitchen countertops in Lagos explains this in detail.

Which is better for Nigerian kitchens?

For many Lagos homes where the kitchen is used for heavy daily cooking, granite is the practical favourite. For homeowners who want a showpiece kitchen, or who cook lightly, marble delivers a look that is hard to beat. Some clients combine both: granite on the main cooking run and marble on the island.

Frequently asked questions

Does marble stain easily?

It can if spills are left for a long time, especially oils and coloured liquids. Wiping spills quickly and keeping the surface sealed reduces the risk.

Can I put hot pots on granite?

Granite handles heat well, but using a trivet for very hot pots is still the safest habit for any countertop.

Which looks more luxurious?

Both can look premium. Marble is often chosen for an elegant, classic look; dramatic granite slabs and deep blacks create a bold, modern feel.
